Practical resume resources

How to improve resume bullet points

Replace vague duties with specific, defensible descriptions of your work.

Your first guest scan needs no account or card. Examples below are fictional, not customer results.

Use action, work and context

A practical starting structure is: what you did, what you worked on and who or what it supported. Add a result when you know it. The structure is a writing aid, not a requirement to force every sentence into the same pattern.

Three fictional before-and-after examples

Reporting

Before: Responsible for reports.

After: Prepared weekly inventory reports in Excel for the operations team.

Supported facts needed: frequency, subject, tool and audience.

Customer support

Before: Helped customers.

After: Answered appointment questions by phone and recorded follow-up notes for the scheduling team.

This identifies the channel and handover; it does not invent a satisfaction score.

Project coordination

Before: Worked on team projects.

After: Tracked open tasks and shared weekly status updates with the project lead.

Use “led” only if you actually led the work.

Questions to ask before adding a metric

  • Do I know the source and time period?
  • Does the figure describe my work or the whole team’s outcome?
  • Can I explain my contribution without taking credit for others?
  • Is the information appropriate to share publicly?

If a number is uncertain or confidential, use an accurate description of scope instead. Review AI suggestions against your original facts before accepting them.

Make the strongest evidence easy to find

Put the most relevant bullet first within each role. Remove repeated duties, choose verbs that reflect your responsibility and keep tense consistent. Read the sentence aloud: if it hides the work behind phrases such as “leveraged synergies,” name the actual action instead.
