Career-change resume guide

Connect your existing experience to a new role without rewriting your history.

Your first guest scan needs no account or card. Examples below are fictional, not customer results.

Translate the evidence, not your job title

A career-change resume should make transferable work visible while keeping your actual titles and employers. Start by mapping the target role’s responsibilities to examples from your current work. A requirement with no supporting example is a development gap, not a keyword to add.

Fictional transition: teaching to project coordination

Suppose a teacher organized a school event and maintained its schedule. An accurate bullet could be:

Coordinated the event preparation schedule with teaching colleagues and tracked outstanding tasks before the school open day.

This supports planning and coordination. It does not claim software delivery experience, a project-management certification or ownership of a commercial project budget.

Summary example

Teacher transitioning into project coordination, with experience organizing event schedules, tracking tasks and communicating updates to colleagues. Seeking to apply those skills in a team coordination role.

Keep the timeline understandable

Use a short summary followed by relevant skills and a chronological experience section. Keep dates visible. Group selected projects separately when that makes your contribution clearer, but identify whether each was employment, study or independent work.

How should I show new training?

List the real course or credential, provider and completion status. If it is in progress, say so. Distinguish a practice exercise from a client project.

What should the cover letter add?

Explain why this role interests you, identify one or two concrete transferable examples and acknowledge the transition concisely. Avoid repeating the entire resume or apologizing for your background.
